Policy for religious differences

I can’t stop thinking about the topic we discussed in class. It is about some religious problems occurred in Britain and France, it pushed me to give it a second thought.
I never imagined that customs for Islamic women to wear facecloth can cause misunderstandings. Because most times I saw them were on the TV, and they all walking or sitting in a dessert where there were few people. After I learned this problem, I surfed on the Internet to know more and now I want to share some information.
France, a nation which contains the most Islamic people in European, forced all the Islamic women in France should not wear niqub or burqa in public. What’s worse, people who use religious reasons to force Islamic women to dress like that will also be charged and punished. President Nicolas Sarkozy claimed that such dressing shows disrespect to those women, and it should not be welcomed. Of course, those words just indicate where the president was standing and may not be very objective. Nevertheless, Holland is totally support this statute and plans to follow it.
On the other side, Britain government states clearly that Britain will not take actions like France on account of its principle of respecting each religion’s culture and customs.
The above is what different countries have done to cope with this troublesome religious problem, and now we need an objective angle to discuss it and try to find a solution.
First reason for France is obviously the security. I believe some serious incidents must have occurred in France which push it to lay down the controversial law. It is common sense that people who can’t be distinguished from faces are truly dangerous. Additionally, terrorists may exploit this to disguise themselves as Islamic women to do something horrible but be able to escape arrest.
Secondly, amounts of citizens will feel a little panic when they meet someone wearing veil. In that situation, it may cause inconvenience in public service industry.
The third reason is just like what the president has claimed. Some French officers hold the view that women dressing like that mean discriminating against them, because only some low-status women need to wear something to cover their faces in Islam. And facecloth is the symbol of religious persecution which is not supposed to take place in a civilization society.
However, there are also many reasonable points against the decree.
The strongest point is that every religion has its own and unique customs, a great nation is supposed to be able to contain them instead of forcing them to assimilate in specific cultures. Only when a country could achieve this, it can be called civilization society.
As is shown on the internet, after a Re-veiling event in the 1970s, women changed their original ideas on the veils and added religious faith in wearing veils. And they even consider it as national consciousness and a holy symbol.
As is mentioned above, it’s truly hard to judge the right and the wrong. Every side has their justifications to defend their benefits among cultural conflicts. When it comes to me, I tend to support a neutral solution. Just as the Islamic women don’t cover their faces but only their heads in Singapore, I think this custom should be spread to France. In that case, the Islam can reserve their own customs and offer convenience to French government at the same time.

Ways to learn English

Since we are going to study in NUS, using English proficiently is an urgent task. Now, I want to share my strategies with you.
The barrier to learn English well is vocabulary. Only 26 letters make thousands of English words, and large amounts of them have similar or same meanings. That means reciting words is a tough assignment. So having a vocabulary book makes much sense. We can collect unfamiliar words the first time we read them onto the vocabulary book. The second step is to recite them at some planned time to pick out difficult ones to focus on. Over some time, your vocabulary is bound to be enlarged.
As is known, reading is always a useful way to learn a language well. It’s necessary for us to read more original books written in English, additionally, it also does good to learn more about English culture.
Furthermore, we need to practice our spoken English by communicating with local people frequently.
Following the suggestions given above, I believe our English can be improved.

My reflection on nowadays education

On the one hand,I think there is no denying that people now have attached more and more importance to education. As a result it is linked with one's future, occupation and even marriage!Millions of students have changed the life via study, with competent academic skills and relevant knowledge. They achieve goals, make fortune and gain reputation. What's more, through the process of education,we cultivate our capabilities on not only study but also social life. For example, from the learning of maths,we develop a logical mind which can contribute to analyzing clearly in order to look through the superficial part of an event and go directly to the core, which eventually will be great benefits.Just as an old saying goes"Everyone was born to be kind, without education,he got changed."Thus, education does have much to do with the formation of one's personality.Better education, better environment is an often case.
However,on the other hand,we can see many problems of the educational system. In China, the monology of educational model has restrained students' imagination and creativity,in a long-term sight,it will worsen the low innovation levels of Asian countries. The similar approach to teach every student and sort of only one standard answer to an open question limit students' ability of contesting. In addition, the equal opportunity is challenged by worldly things, such as social status. In Britain, statistics show that half of the students at Oxford and Cambridge come from expensive private schools, which means educational resource is allocated unfairly. But it is quite a realistic problem.
To sum up,educational system is like a sword with two sides,so what we should do is to maximize its advantages and minimize its disadvantages. Finally,I belive we can utilize education in the best way to serve everyone!

plagiarism--why it is severe in Chinese universities

Recently,as a lot of satisfying theses turned out to be some productions of plagiarism, poeple may ask that why this problem reaches such a severe point? From the perspective of a Chinese student,I think it may result from these following.

Firstly, before attending universities, they may be taught to modle on some good essays as a crash mathod to help them get a good mark in the examination.Gradually, they are not motivated to write on thier own. What is more, plagiarism doesn't get enough attention. There is no such a institution in China to check whether the theses are plagiazied so that dishonesty is always free from punishment. Moreover,it is too easy to graduate from a Chinese university. The diploma of an outstanding student is the same as that of a bad one,not like the institution in Singapore. What students need to do is just to let their theses pass for graduation. As a result, they may spend three years to flatter girls. Finally, they learn quite little but have to write theses. How to solve it?------Plagiasm!Besides,under the employment of pressure, many students are forced to study for a master's degree or a doctor's degree, which may be beyond their abilities. With no choice, whey plagiarize. At the end,in addition, all these above are my privite opinions, which is without suffient support.

English Learning

I used to memorize vocabularies with a hardworking learning strategy. Wherever I came across new words, I writed these new vocabularies and their exact definitions in Chinese on my vocabulary notebook. But all I did is just for dictation quizzes. It won’t leave a significant impression in my mind. I can’t master vocabularies because of paying too much attention on their definitions. After the class on Thursday, I learned something new about vocabulary and collocation. I can learn collocations in the form of word folks and bubble networks with my brain storm. Some internet sources such as dictionary.com and wordandphrase.info will also help. With these methods, I will gain better knowledge about how to combine words to make them meaningful. I’m sure it will greatly help me improve my English proficiency.

English learning

In nowadays ,English has become a global language and it is widely used all over the world, such as business trading, culture exchanging, studying abroad, and some other activities in the world.so learning English is becoming more and more important, especially for those who want to have a better development of the career.

Most of the people started to learn English when they were very young and they have put a lot of effort into it,however, how to learn English well still puzzles many people.Learning English is a long progress,it takes time and needs us to put efforts,so we should find proper ways to study English.

Maybe for most English learners, the oral English is really a big problem. Many people dare not speak English confidently for the fear of making mistakes or being teased, even if their English is already good enough .I think making mistakes is unavoidable even for those native speakers, let alone for the beginners. So just speak out bravely and loudly.Do not be shy and no one will laugh at you.Just try to seize every possible opportunity to practice your speaking.I am sure in this way your spoken English will improve better and better.

As for the writing ,it needs a lot of practice on the base of a large vocabulary. Many students prepare word books and put them into pockets.Whenever they have time, they will recite a few words.I think it is really an effective way for increasing your vocabulary. And also try to form a good habit of reading books in English. The more you read ,the better you can write.

Learning English is a progress of accumulation. It need us to be patient and insist on it.As long as you keep learning and practicing ,nothing will be a trouble for you.So just enjoy the progress of learning English and you will find much fun in it .

English learning

When we become a SM3 student,we are destined to make friends with English.I still remember the first time I know English in primary school,I just think it is very interesting.
With the increase of grade,English become one of the important subjects.Meanwhile it no longer interesting but boring. So when we graduate from high school,we can only do multiple choice questions, although we have learned English for nearly ten years. Then during our university,we should have enough time to improve our English level, but because of the lack of language environment and perseverance,we continue drift along muddle along. As a result of that, most students who has already graduated from university still can't communicate in English freely.

Now we have a good opportunity that once in a blue moon that we can come to a country with English as its official language.Whether in order to adapt to the life here or adapt to the study,we should make a fresh start to learn English well and let the English become a ability but not only a subject for us.We should make a new achievable goal and have schedule for it.We also need to make full use of time to study English, for example ,when we waiting for a bus or lining up for for lunch in the canteen.

As a language, the four important skills in English are listening, speaking, reading and writing. In Singapore we can listen English everywhere. That a good thing. But we should try our best to to distinguish the different accent from different people, and then choose the best accent to learn. As a Chinese student we always lack of confidence when we talk with a foreigner. In fact, speaking in the best way to improve,it can help us find our mistakes easily,so we should catch every chance to practise our oral English.Reading and writing are basic skills. As long as we don't slack and keep our method in high school, they are not big problems. In NUS there are many libraries,we can make full use of them to read some original English books and note the beautiful sentences.

In a word,we should pay more energy than in China to study English.I believe we can master this language one day. Then we can understand the charm of English well!

Education

Nowadays, with the rapiddevelopment all over the world, people pay more and more attation toeducation.Since people believe that the higher degree they achieve, the betterlife they will have, there are increasing number of people apply foruniversities, especially the best ones, which makes the college entranceexamination more competitive. Most people start to read thousands of books, doexercise day and night, and give up proper rest and relaxation. However, pleasestop to think about whether it is the goal of the education, which kind of peoplewill be built through this education, and whether we do need this kind of people.
In my opinion, thistyple of education needs some promotion, although as long as it exists,it is reasonable.Thepattern of the education and the exams today does can help us select some peoplehaving more good qualities, such as intelligent and diligent, but is it enough to satisfiy the needs of society? And can we make theexams more practical?I do not think testing people about some academic thingsjust to choose who can be applied by good universities is perfect. If it is morepractical, even those who fail in the exams can gain something as well, andeveryone can find their position, and make well use of what they have learnt in order to make their life and our world more wonderful.
All in all, thereis no doubt that education is vital important, but if it is more flexible and we can apply what we gain from education into our life,it will contribute more to our life.

Education condition in China

Recently , our class has been talking about the education condition in China which reminds me a lot about my school life ,and makes me think a lot .
In China, there are really many excellent teachers. My English teacher for secondary school is Carol. She is young , lacking of teaching experience ,but what she has is a considerate and kind heart to her students. After graduating ,we got to know what she had suffered during the final year . Her boyfriend broke up with her because she was too busy , her father suffered cancer but she could not quit her job because 140 students were waiting for her. How could she leave us when we needed her most at our most tough moment. But she said whenever she felt she could hardly bear, she came to our class to gain encouragement from our smiling face. She really enjoys teaching us .
However ,something disappointing is that not all the teachers are like that, some they teach because they have to finish there work. I think it is because teachers in China are under too much pressure and they can not enjoy their work anymore. The school will rank average grade of each class after every exams. And if the class you teach got the lowest mark , it will be a rather embarrassing thing. And sometimes the ranking even relates to their salaries . So what they focus on is how to tell students as much knowledge as they can in the limited time but not how to make their classes lively to raise the interest of students.
Problems like that can not be solved in few days, but I always believe in my country. Through constantly reform we can finally work out the education system that suits us best.

My impression of Singapore

First,I want to say although this topic has been talked for many times,I think it's meaningful for me to put my memory in order after landed here for the first time.
On 20th Dec,we arrived the Changi airport and take the bus to our hostel,a place called Labrodor lodge, near the sea and MRT station.Along the way with our guide from MOE,we know more about Singapore, including how does th Changi airport get its name ,how many people in Singapore ,something about flowers,F1 and so on.Looking out of the window of the bus ,I got my impression of Singapore.Let me describe it.Trees are thick and very different from what we see in China, and there are some flowers.Green is all around the road.We can see the busy port with big containers besides the sea.And I saw the companies and the buses and people and so on.Can't remember from then on.
Then after I went through the cultrual tour and visted the places like Sentosa, and went to the shops many times.Staying with the classmates or at dormitory is comfortable ,but doesn't help to communicate with the country.I started to feel that I was exposed to the culture, and language is still a problem.Emm..
I belive bridging course will help a lot if we try hard. It's so late tonight because I have done something important before I wrote it .That's all!Have a good dream!

The charming language

For me,I like learning language.Though the only foreign language I have learned is English,I am really impressed by its fascination.Maybe for many students who are expert in science or mathematics, languages like English are not so interesting. But personally, science and mathematics are interesting, while languages are charming. As I have said in my oral report today,I'm easily impressed by the human wisdom, and I think the language is just one of the greatest kinds of human wisdom in the world.
When I compare English with Chinese, distinct differences are found, but two similiar kinds of wisdom for explaining and transporting ideas work together. It's really interesting to express something in different languages, through which I can feel I'm the ruler and owner of the words, languages, and ideas. It's enjoyable to be a ruler of my own mind, and then maybe I'll get the courage to rule my world.

When I was in primary school,I used to believe it's really cool to communicate with another language besides my mother tongue.I'll have one more language to express my thoughts, which is just like knowing one more beautiful song or owning another colourful pencil to write.Learning and mastering a foreign language is pretty attractive for me at that time. And fortunately,as time went by,the thought never fades away. When I learn it,I still feel so happy and satisfied as a young child picks up a cute shell by the sea.
By learning the language,wo can also see the culture, the logical thinking, and the wisdom of human beings. We human live in the world, see and experience a lot of things, and then record it in our unique way and pass it to our descendants. The whole process is full of magic and amazing intelligence. It's wonderful.

I love the language, the charming and fancy work of human beings.

The unsettled clash in Chinese Education

As is known to the world, Chinese students are perhapsthe most hardworking studentsin the world. But up to now, there are not many science achievements made by Chinese scientists which can prove the correctness of Chinese education system. So the most significant question is can we find a solution.

Some people would say of course , we should change our education thoroughly and totally. The purpose of school has been fully misunderstood. I think everybody can find out the problem, students are taught like feeding ducks. Teachers will find every materials for you. All you have to do is to memorize it. No discovering is contained. All that support students are the expectation from parents and teachers and finding a good job. Besides these ,there are nothing left but being tired of studying without motivation. I was used to be a grade 3 high school student preparing for the final test. I can tell that the situationis three times worse than what I have described. After the exam, almost everybody tore up their books to release their unhappiness and anger. When you saw the paper flew like snow, you would only feel sad for students and for education.

It seems that the only way to make a difference is to abandon the whole system. No more test, no more homework. From day to day, our only task is to do whatever we  want .Teachers can use more experiments to activate children’s inner desire. So everybody can develop their interests sufficiently and unlimitedly. I’m sure that all that beyond is our ultimate goal. But we shouldn’t neglect or ignore who will pay for all these things. China is still a developing country, most ofthe people are poor. When we adopt the new education method, I can assure youthat condition in most remote area in China cannot be as well as it in rich cities. And without exams many students from poor family may never get a chance to make their lives different. The current education has many disadvantages, but it at least ensures the equality in some extent. And we have to know that the equality is the basis of the steadiness of our society. Without equality, everything is just a dream.

So that’sthe barrier China faces today. On one hand, we want to dig out students’ potential talents, on the other hand, we have to ensure the equality. We’re like walking on the ice, every single mistake will end up in huge disaster. We need to find the balance point between these two sides.

Impression of Singapore

This is the first time I go abroad to another country. Singapore , the country I have dreamed in my head times and times .

As soon as I came here on 19th of December I felt the absolutly different weather here .Though it was the coldest months here , the temperature was still about 22 degrees . It rained almost everyday those days . It just suddenly and heavily about 3 P.M. and stopped after a few hours . To response this special weather , I found that Singapore had some special designs . There are always corridors with roofs to link buildings and bus stops together so that we can even go out without unbrellas . I love this human oriented design .

Singapore also left me a deep impression . As a multi-culture country , I can find almost all kinds of food around world here easily . I love the curry , laksa and BBQ here . Being easy is very important because I can also find these kinds of food in Shanghai but they must be in very expensive restaurants . But I can just find them in NUS's canteen . How fabulas it is to me , a person who see the delicious food as one of the most important enjoyment in my life . Maybe the only shortcoming is that vegertable here is not enough .

Anyway , I'm new here . There are still many things I should to be used to . I'll learn more things from the locals and merge into this flourish city .

My Impression of Singapore

I have been Singapore for about one month, things here are still a little new to me.But I started to love this country, because of its clean environment, kind people, and most important, its humanization designs.

When I came to Singapore, and went shopping for the first time,I am surprised to see a lot of people who sit in wheelchair shop with their family. In China,I seldom see people with wheelchair in the street,so I'm astonished that what I have seen.

It didn't take me long to find the reason.Almost every building has special path for these people, and inside,it also has special toilets.Even the elevators have lower buttons. But in China, just a few buildings has special path for people sitting in wheelchair, few of them have special toilets or something else, which results in disable people preferring to staying at home.

It's just one detail to show the humanizasion designs of Singapore.I think when I live here longer,
I will be more interested in its colorful culture and careful policies.

The strategies of learning English

English is the worldwide language and is the most popular language in the world. So ,i think it's very important for everyone to learn English especially for students who is now studying in a country based on speaking English like us.

Someone has said that interest is the most important strategy. i strongly support the idea. However, here are some strategies which are also very important.

Firstly, when learning English, what we cannot ignore is diligence .If we don't try our best to learn English, we won't accumulate a large vocabulary and we cannot master the grammar .what's more, we can’t even know the pronunciation which is very useful when we communicate with others using English.

Secondly, i think patience is also very important. when we learn English, we must face many problems and feel very confused about the problems .it should be the common situation. Then we cannot lose patience, because if we lose patience, we cannot concentrate on ourselves and we may be more careless which can let us make more mistakes like spelling and pronunciating uncorrectly. Patience can also let us clam down when facing questions and complex sentences which are hard to deal with.

Last but not least, we should also use correct ways to remember the words. we cannot just memorise the word we learn without using some effective ways. In my opinion, we can use the words that we can't remember to make a sentence to help us remember. We can also remember some words by categorying them. What we can't ignore is that we should revise the new words we learn regularly.

So, all of the above are the strategies i want to mention and i think they are all necessary for us to learn English.

Education

Just with the development of the society,we nowadays have more competition. As time goes by, we realize the importance of education better and better. But what we also have to admit is that the educational system in our country is not perfect at all. And we really should do something to improve the situation.

As far as I am concerned, we should encourage more teachers to teach the students. Just as I said today, if we can employ more teachers, there will be more opportunities for the students to have a smaller group to have a class. And only if there are fewer students in one class can the teacher organise the class better, teach more efficiently and get a better understanding of children to develop their interests just as Finland do.

We can also encourage children to go to school by avoiding or decreasing the tuition. Just do what England does. And I am sure the ratio of spread of education will increase a lot.

But there will be a problem if we want to employ teachers as many as possible and the change of tuition. That is the money. We do need a lot of money to have more teachers. But as we all know, our country is not rich enough. So we have also deal with this problem before we want to improve the educational system. I think we can increase the tax among the rich. We can collect more taxes from the rich and keep the rate of taxes among the normal crowd. In a way, that means the rich contribute to the education and also don't make the burden heavier for the normal people. And enact the law which is more strict that can lead to less embezzlement. So more money will be saved to improve the education.

There is still a long way to go before we improve our educational system. I do hope the government of our society can do more improvement for our children and make them receive better education.

Learning English

These days we are learning strategies of English learning. And personally, if one really wants to learn English well, firstly, he should be interested in English. One can not have any achievement in an area where he has no interest, just like the old saying says," Interest is the best teacher." If the person simply doesn't find any interest in English learning, how can he concentrate himself on English study and how can he have passion for English. So, wanting to improve your English, you should develop your interest in English.
Secondly, practice is important. Any skills, without enough practice, I think can not be mastered well. Therefore, one should practice. Read some English novels, watch some English movies and do some exercise, then you will find your English greatly improved. Just keep in mind “Skill comes from practice."
At last, use it. What's your purpose in learning English? No doubt, it is for better communication with others. So after enough practice, you should be confident enough to use it. And I think it is also the best the way to prove that you have totally handle a skill.
Still, apart from English learning, I think any skills can be mastered in this way.

my impression of singapore

I am here in Singapore for one month. It is a really great country--although it is so small that I can travel from the east to west within about one hour by subway.despite the small size,i am very amazed with Singapore.
Firstly Singapore is a green city.I was born and live in wuxi for twenty years and i have never see so many kinds of trees and flowers that i have even never heared. When i caught the first sight of Singapore in the plane ,i was shocked by this charming country--tall buddings with countless trees--it is like a city born in a forest. It so exciting and comfortable to be living in such a green city.
Secondly,Singapore is also a modern city with fast pace..people here are all very very busy, they walk very fast in the street even without a break.
I think I will fall in love with this amazing city--Singapore.

First impression of Singapore

Hello,it's just exciting to apply for a new blog address.I have just been in Singapore for twenty days. It's really a pleasure being in Singapore, which is a clean and neat country. And it's a wonder that so many different cultures exist here at the same time.
